October Travels

October 27th, 2009

After a relaxing September spent mostly in Brooklyn, we hopped back into our dependable Kia for a 12-hour road trip to Chicago to play the Decibelle Music & Arts Festival.

Colorful trees laced with snow made for a nice drive through mountainous Pennsylvania:

Once in Chicago, Melissa and I, both exhausted from driving, decided to stay in for the night. Kit, refreshed from hours of sleep, Blackberry Tweeting, and 30 minutes behind the wheel, decided he wanted to go out with his new BFF, Paris:

After a decent night’s sleep and some deep dish from Art of the Pizza, we headed to the venue. We dug the other musicians who played with us, especially Shayana Zaid & the Catch and our friend and favorite redhead friend from Appleton, WI, Chelsea Z (shout out to Baker). Here’s a shot of Melissa doing a little dance a la Ashlee Simpson when Kit, who never forgets lyrics, forgot the second line of “Queer Nation”:

The next day, we drove our butts back to the East coast. To get into the holiday “spirit,” Kit read from The Greenbrier Ghost and Other Strange Stories which had a lot of West Virginia colloquialism and were all poorly written. Kit made up lesbian plot lines to make the stories more entertaining. We laughed.

The next weekend we drove to the University of Cincinnati for a show at the Catskeller. It was one of the best audiences we’ve ever had. Because there were students from a few different school, we decided to have an intercollegiate tie tying contest. Becca and Erica from Northern Kentucky University won. Thanks to the folks from the UC Women’s Center and Gender Bloc for having us.

Cincinnati is one of my new favorite cities: it’s beautiful, everyone is really nice, and it’s across the river from Kentucky, home of my hero, Loretta Lynn. Unfortunately, Kit almost met his death in our hotel. He should be thankful that Melissa spared him:
