afterHours Performance at Northeastern

October 9th, 2008

Talk about a great way to kick off a fall tour. I just want to take a moment to really reflect on the performance that we did at Northeastern University on Tuesday as part of their Pride Week. It’s pretty amazing when I see the Asian-American organizations on campus really reaching out to the queer community and wanting to pitch in and make the event about sharing cultures and supporting each other.

Check out what Mike Rougeau from the Huntington News wrote about us.

Shoutouts to Delia and Van who really pulled it together. Thanks to folks at afterHours (the cafe and music venue on campus), and of course, the Pride Week folks NU BiLAGA who organized, supported, and made it an excellent event to jump start the Superstar World Tour 2008.

And thank you for the lovely ladies at the Asian-American sorority who stayed to take pictures with us - sorry it took us so long to get around to it, but we really appreciated your presence at the event!

And also a HUGE shoutout to our GAA - our Good Asian Assistant - Caroline Lau for helping us out with merch, logistics, and life.

It was also pretty great to be back in Boston. My mother hasn’t been this happy to see me in a long time. She even fed our meters in the morning for us and made me soup. Northeastern was also really wonderfully familiar. We wandered around the Berklee area in the morning and ran into some people on the street within an hour of stepping out of the car.

I have a little bit of a geographical history regarding Northeastern because I used to work at a school inside the YMCA next door, so it was definitely nostalgic to be back here again. It’s as if I ought to be going back to the office to get some work done after the performance.

Speaking of performance, there were a couple of highlights. For one, the audience was incredibly attentive, and most people who flooded in towards the beginning stayed till the end. Kit read a new piece about plastic being the fabric of our community. I performed my new song “One Light On” for the first time ever - I have to admit I was pretty nervous, and I kept flubbing on the chords because I had always practiced this song sitting down, and only realized during the performance that I can’t see where my fingers are when I’m standing up! Another highlight: the sing-along at the end of Such a Nice Guy was a success! We had straight men and straight women singing along too. A downer: Kit did something extraordinarily bizarre and completely forgot the ending to his trademark piece Badass. This is bizarre because he’s never forgotten any part of this poem in his entire life, so it’s definitely weird. I fed him the line and he nailed the rest of it.

The BEST part of the whole night? Getting an NU Pride T-shirt with a rainbow Husky paw on the front, AND a soft warm hoodie for the upcoming chilly fall from the Asian American Center. I love free clothes!

“one day when he saw Li in the back of a drag bar…”

“When I was 5 [years old], like all Asian children, I was forced to play the piano and the violin…” hey, that’s reinforcing stereotypes! i unfortunately was never forced to learn piano or violin :(
