Stuck in Illinois!

April 10th, 2008

Our apologies for long overdue blogs, we’ve been on the road and getting ready for our cross-country leg. But these past few weeks have been amazing starting with the end of March and the University of Springfield IL. You can watch a clip of our time there which was full of hilarious moments of car breakdowns and missing our flight.

The audience was great that night and we had dinner afterwards with the queer org who cooked dinner and bought tofutti cuties which was awesome! I got to reconnect with an old friend Beth who is amazing and doing wonderful things at the University with student life and the queer groups. The drive up to the school was full of cornfields and soy fields along with pro-gun signs which really gave us a good laugh since for the past few months people have been telling us that we should be carrying a gun for protective purposes. Which we have decided is not going to happen since a friend of ours made a good point that Melissa may shoot me instead of a burglar accidentally.

So when we landed back in Boston we were off to another show at Babson College where I am coming out of the closet to say that I attended for undergrad. As a side note, at some point Melissa’s guitar broke and we had to go rent one and they gave her the ugliest piece of crap with a broken string, and it was funny to watch her be so frustrated with the thing. Aside from that, it was good to be back at the place that brought me to Boston and where I really grew into myself. The show was really well catered with lots of red bean buns, sticky rice dumplings, and other dim sum items which really made our night since we house fat asian kids inside ourselves and love all things asian ;)

This was the first show that as much of the administration came out as the students, which was really cool and made for a great night. Babson was also the start of the deterioration of Melissa’s voice since we both caught some kind of sickness which had us sore and coughing for days and Melissa began to lose her voice after that night.

But she is a badass mofo and the morning after we were in a 7:30am sound check at the Annual GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network) Conference whose work is to, “ensure safe schools for ALL students, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity.” This is a issue that is so important and it was amazing to be in a room with people who were there to keep this work alive. They were the most enthusiastic group of people who at 9am were cheering, clapping, and giving us all their energy. We felt so much love and enthusiasm that morning and had a great time performing and speaking in that room. We appreciated many of the students that came up to talk with us afterwards and share with us. The conference was a huge success with a great turnout and line of of speakers, workshops, and the organizers were top notch. The entire day was so well organized thanks to Morgan who was really nice and worked incredibly hard to make it all happen.

After this four day stretch Melissa’s voice was shot to shit and completely gone - awful for her but amusing for me since she couldn’t talk and I had to be her voice. She also somehow found a text to speech program and talked to me in an electronic voice that sounded like it belonged to a 43 year old white lady. So I spent that next three days helping her nurse her voice back to health and speaking for her. Which included talking to guitar tech people which I know nothing about and also talking to the cd production house people at Video Transfer who are handling her new cd, “2 Seconds Away” which is scheduled to come out in three days! Which means that we will have both our cds and our t-shirts available for sale online very soon!

Ok, I am in food coma (kanack attack) and need to eat some more to keep my buzz going.

Having driven across the entire country with Erin, I can totally relate to how a breakdown would suck so much. At least you made it out alive. :) When are you guys hitting up Seattle??
